Think in music zones, not a rigid genre list
A useful brief might say “current pop and R&B early, more house later, plenty of 2000s throwbacks, no heavy rock.” That communicates more than a random list of 100 songs because it tells the DJ how the event should feel.
Different parts of the night can have different jobs. Arrival music creates atmosphere, dinner music protects conversation, familiar crossover tracks can open the dance floor, and more specific genres can come later once the crowd is committed.
Requests are another signal. The DJ does not have to play every request, but repeated requests from different parts of the room can reveal what the guests want without abandoning the host’s brief.
